1. MINIMIZE DIRECT EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT

Too much direct sunlight can cause your hardwoods to fade and discolor. Try to close blinds and draw shades or curtains to prevent unnecessary exposure. If your room faces east, for example, don’t open your blinds until the afternoon. This will also help protect furniture and other items in your room from fading.

2. WATCH INDOOR HUMIDITY LEVELS

Too much or too little humidity in the air in your home will affect your wood floors. That’s because wood is naturally porous and expands and contracts with changes in moisture in its environment. Dry air makes wood shrink and humid air makes it swell.

Outside air in the summertime has more humidity. But air conditioners remove humidity from the air. So your home can have too much or too little moisture in the air. Some seasonal shrinking or expanding of your floors will happen, but it’s best to try to keep the humidity level in your home between 30% and 50%.You can purchase a hygrometer at your local home improvement store to find out what your humidity level is.

Winter weather can be harsh and impossible to avoid. The main problems that you may be faced with are dirt, grit, debris and water being brought in from outside.

Hardwood floors can easily be scratched and damaged by grit and salt that is used to protect the streets and pavements from freezing weather.

There is also the issue of snow, slush and rainwater being brought onto your hardwood floor from outdoor footwear.

To minimise any damage to your hardwood floor, follow these steps:

  1.  Put doormats at all entrances to your house. These will help to catch any unwanted grit, dirt and debris from outdoors.
  2.  Remove outdoor footwear before walking on your wooden floor. Ideally these should be left in a porch or garage and not directly on your hardwood floor.
  3.  Sweep and clean your wooden floor regularly to remove any dirt or debris that has crept onto your floors.
  4.  If you have pets, clean and dry their paws as soon as they come inside.

If you are having a real Christmas tree this year then there are two main things to watch out for.

  • Don’t use a steam floor cleaner, which could damage the finish.
  • Put soft furniture pads on the bottoms of kitchen tables and chairs to keep them from scratching or denting the wood floor.
  • Check frequently under the sink and around the dishwasher and fridge for signs of leaking. If you discover a leak. Shut off the water to the kitchen and call a plumber.
