Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Posted on: June 12th, 2023 by Carliuska Gonzalez No Comments

What do we mean when we say “engineered hardwood flooring”?

When talking about hardwood flooring, what do we mean when we say “engineered”? Many people have that wrong connotation when it comes to engineered wood floors.

They would often regard “engineered” as something “fabricated”. The fact is that engineered wood floor is usually composed of one hundred percent hardwood.

Composition

Every piece consists of three up to nine wood plies which are strategically bonded altogether through pressure and heat methods.

Most of the time; the top layer or wear-layer is the visible wood species while underneath the surface layer is made up of more stable wood species like birch.

https://www.woodfloorplanet.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/12/engineered.jpg

With this kind of composition. It will be easier and more convenient for you to install it. Below or at ground level, at the top of a concrete material; at a heat source that comes radiating, and any other types of hardwood covering like tiles and vinyl. With such things in mind; there is no wonder why a great deal of people in the United States take time to spend on engineered hardwood flooring to come up with enhanced homes and properties at a lesser price and similar quality.

Moisture Resistant

Compared to solid hardwood, engineered flooring is more resistant to moisture.

This means that chances of expanding and contracting are less likely. To happen with engineered wood floors. They are also distributed to in ready to install options; allowing buyers to have them installed immediately upon purchase.

The fact that engineered wood is fully hardwood; one gets the benefits offered by solid hardwoods. In fact, the top layer of this kind of flooring has been cut using the rotary cut method.

The sawn wear surface will result in a natural hardwood appearance. The rotary peel on the other hand is a hardwood layer (veneer) removed from the log with the use of a large lathe.

Durable and Long Lasting

Like any other types of hardwood floors, engineered flooring can actually last from thirty up to a hundred years depending on the wood brand being used.

Keep in mind that there are certain engineered brands which can be sanded while others do not allow sanding. Generally; engineered floors with thin layers should never be sanded especially when they start to wear.

When wearing of the floor takes place, what you just need to employ is to recoat it to prevent further damage. For those types of engineered floors that have three millimeters thickness and more, sanding is allowed from two to three times during its lifetime. By doing so, you will have the benefit of treating certain parts of the floor that need to be refinished to allow it to get back to its former look.

Can Be Installed Below Grade

Since many of the homes in the United States come with basements, the use of engineered floor is very popular. This is because such type of floor is constructed the cross-ply way. This is something which can never be achieved from using solid wood floors as they can only be installed on or above grades only.

Additionally; the versatility of engineered wood floors is also great in the sense that they can also be installed on concrete and this again, is not possible with solid wood floors.

Excellent for High Rise Buildings

New York and other great cities in the United States are generally dotted with so many high-rise buildings.

Many of these buildings are as high as thirty; forty, fifty, up to one hundred floors. Because of these; builders and contractors often choose engineered wood floors. Simply because it is much lighter compared to other types of flooring options such as concrete, solid wood, etc.

Can be installed over Sub-floors

There are times when homeowners prefer not to remove their existing flooring and because of this; their job is to look for wood flooring options that can be installed directly over their existing hard floor surfaces like ceramic tiles. This kind of problem can be easily shouldered with the use of engineered flooring option.

How to remodel at low cost?

If you are looking to remodel at low cost. Painting the floor can be the cheapest and fastest solution you can use to have a floor remodel.

If your economy does not allow you to change floors, choosing to paint the one that is already there is an excellent idea. The advantages are incredible and it will save you money.

Achieve amplitude or reduction, painted floors can deceive the eye.
Painted floors can create some clever optical illusions. If you have white or light-colored walls, paint the floors to match to make the space feel much larger.

Choose paint with a brighter gloss or add a gloss top coat to bring in more light. Or, choose a color that is darker than the walls and ceiling to visually cement a space and add drama. They are infinitely customizable.

On the other hand, painted floors do not need to be solid. Use painter’s tape to create painted checkerboards, patterns, borders, or “rugs.” You can also delineate the space by painting areas in different shades. The effectiveness of this option is that it gives freedom to the imagination, achieving dazzling finishes with just customization.

Painting floors is cheap

Compared to the cost of laying a whole new floor, painting old floors is incredibly inexpensive: all you need is a gallon or a few of paint, depending on the size to be painted, plus primer and supplies.

And over time… Worry about the wear it may have, the solution is simple just add more paint.

No need to worry too much about wear and tear. When your floors start to lose their shine, simply add another coat of paint, or a few touch-ups, and you’ll be back to a like-new floor.

Painted hardwood floors are most often associated with seaside cottages, where they originated for their uncomplicated practicality, but painting can be done not only on hardwood floors but also on tile, concrete, plywood, and even linoleum.

I did not wait any longer, nor did I spend more with professionals, you will be able to have a flat like new with a low investment.

The best floor for your terrace

Posted on: August 23rd, 2022 by Carliuska Gonzalez No Comments

How to know that is the best floor for my terrace?

It is important that before buying the materials to remodel your terrace. You define what style you want it to have. For this you must first define what activities you prefer to do there.

Ask yourself if the use you will give it is for gardening. To cook barbecues; to exercise or to read and relax. Depending on the answer you will be able to identify which style is the right one for your terrace.

Once you are clear about which style is best for your terrace. It is time to choose the floors that will serve as coating for the surfaces. We recommend you opt for marble-type. Stone-type or wood-type ceramic tiles, since they are the ones with the most natural appearance.

Generally, the floors are exposed to the elements. This means that they will permanently receive the sun’s rays or rainwater. That is why it is very important that the floors you choose are resistant to moisture and are manufactured for these climatic conditions.

Size of your terrace

If the terrace or patio is small, we recommend that you apply the coating strategically on one or two prominent walls and on the remaining walls you decide on a much more neutral finish, for example completely painting the surface.

In addition to giving beauty and change to your home, all remodeling must be functional and generate security for the inhabitants of the house. That is why we recommend that you make sure that the floors of your patio or terrace are non-slip; in this way you will avoid accidents if they are wet.

Make this a place to enjoy the outdoors, relax and refresh your home.

Summertime hardwood floor tips

Posted on: June 19th, 2022 by Carliuska Gonzalez No Comments

4 Summertime hardwood floor tips

How does the song go? “Summertime and the livin’ is easy.” Well, maybe not for your hardwood floors. Summer can be challenging for hardwood floors.

Here are 4 tips to help your hardwoods handle the heat and humidity.

1. MINIMIZE DIRECT EXPOSURE TO SUNLIGHT

Too much direct sunlight can cause your hardwoods to fade and discolor. Try to close blinds and draw shades or curtains to prevent unnecessary exposure. If your room faces east, for example, don’t open your blinds until the afternoon. This will also help protect furniture and other items in your room from fading.

2. WATCH INDOOR HUMIDITY LEVELS

Too much or too little humidity in the air in your home will affect your wood floors. That’s because wood is naturally porous and expands and contracts with changes in moisture in its environment. Dry air makes wood shrink and humid air makes it swell.

Outside air in the summertime has more humidity. But air conditioners remove humidity from the air. So your home can have too much or too little moisture in the air. Some seasonal shrinking or expanding of your floors will happen, but it’s best to try to keep the humidity level in your home between 30% and 50%.You can purchase a hygrometer at your local home improvement store to find out what your humidity level is.

3. KIDS, GUESTS, AND PETS BRING THE OUTSIDE IN ALL SUMMER

In the warmer months people come and go from inside to out and back again dozens of times a day And with them comes dirt, dust, and grime from outside. Dust and grime can build up and scratch your floor. Sweep or vacuum the high-traffic areas a little more often during summer months to keep the dirt and scratching to a minimum.

4. POOLS AND SPRINKLERS MEAN WATER DAMAGE

If you have a pool, or your neighbor has a pool, or if your kids like to break out the water games and sprinkler, make sure you have a plan for all of those wet feet, swimsuits, and towels. If your bathroom floor is hardwood, be extra diligent about checking for wet items on the floor. You may want to put a basket in the corner to collect wet towels and suits, and flip flops.

At Wood Floor Planet we provide quality hardwood flooring services. From dustless refinishing to installation, residential to commercial, we are New York and New Jersey wood floor experts.

The best Flooring for your Lifestyle

Posted on: July 25th, 2021 by Carliuska Gonzalez No Comments

SELECTING THE BEST FLOORING FOR YOUR LIFESTYLE

In this post, we highlight a few aspects to keep in mind when choosing hardwood flooring, including your lifestyle, budget and more.

  • Pet owners should consider modern vinyl and laminates for scratch-resistant wear and water-resistant or waterproof flooring.
  • Install waterproof or water-resistant flooring such as vinyl plank, tile, or sheet vinyl in rooms with high foot traffic.
  • Climate plays a part in certain floor materials, making an engineered option more suitable.
  • Replacing carpet with a hard flooring surface alleviates allergens.
  • Numerous flooring brands offer environmentally-friendly products for green-conscious households.
  • The subfloor can determine what type of flooring you can install and whether you need an attached pad or additional underlayment.

Do you have pets?

If you want to install hardwood flooring, one or two small pets won’t alleviate the option; but if you have large or multiple pets, you may want to consider a vinyl or laminate product. These floors have scratch resistant wear layers for durability that hold up to everyday wear and tear from your pets’ nails and playful activity. Modern vinyl and laminate floors have the same visuals as hardwood floors including distressed, wire brushed, and rustic wood styles, or earthy, natural patterns. So, you can still have the look you want; but the function that you need (and less worry about damage to your floors!).

Do you have children?

Consider the ages and activity level of your children. Are they active in sports and bring home muddy or heavy equipment every day?

If you have a dedicated area for those items, such as a mudroom or entryway, consider using a durable, waterproof or water resistant product for that space. If you think these items will make their way all over the house, you may want to choose a super durable, yet beautiful vinyl plank, tile or sheet product that will stand up to years of activity, for your entire home. Not only are luxury vinyl floors easy to clean and maintain; but the large range of color and style options available in realistic wood, stone and tile patterns will surprise you!

Do your family members have allergies?

Hard surface flooring is a much better choice over any carpet product to alleviate allergy symptoms and triggers. Hardwood, vinyl, and laminate products can be safely and thoroughly cleaned frequently with the peace of mind that there are no hidden dust mites or mold lurking beneath the surface.

Where are you installing your new flooring?

All Wood Floor Planet of flooring, including hardwood, can be used in any space in your home. It is the collections within each flooring type that offer the diversity of installation for basements, concrete slabs and/or less than perfect subfloor conditions.

Where do you live?

The climate in which you live can limit your hardwood selections. Avoid wide plank, solid only hardwood collections if you live in a very humid, southern region of the US. Although gluing and nailing these products can alleviate some cupping and crowning. An engineered option may be available in the same visual and will result in a much more stable installation.

With today’s options in flooring. It is very easy to find the look that you want with the functionality that you need.

Are you environmentally friendly?

Many families today take steps to recycle and bring reusable bags to the grocery store to promote a healthier earth. But when it comes to your home. Did you know you can choose a green-friendly flooring option?

Wood Floor Planet offers numerous flooring options from manufacturers who undergo strict procedures and rules to gain certification status. Some of the environmental commitments from our brands ensure that the wood is gathered from sustainable forests.

Refinishing Hardwood Floors Advices

Posted on: April 29th, 2021 by Carliuska Gonzalez No Comments

Helpful Hints for Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Hardwood floor refinishing and sanding is unforgiving work. Make a mistake, and it will show. However, a refinished floor can bring beauty to a room like no other project.

Check out some helpful tips about how to refinish hardwood floors below.

Tips for Refinishing Hardwood Floors

Recoating hardwood flooring is an excellent choice for homeowners whether you’re renovating a single room or you want to breathe new life into all of the flooring in your home.

Let’s take a look at the top tips for how to refinish hardwood floors:

Be sure to prepare your home before sanding and refinishing wood floors:

Clear the area: You will want to remove rugs, furniture, and other items from the hardwood flooring area that you will be working on.

Thoroughly clean the sanded floor: You need to clear the entire floor of dust and debris before applying the new finish.

Secure floorboards: Use finishing nails to secure any loose floorboards before recoating your hardwood flooring.

Sanding your floors is one of the most critical steps to refinish hardwood floors because it removes the old stain and turns your entire floor into a blank slate.

Carefully apply polyurethane:

Many pros pour polyurethane along the floor and then spread it with an 18-inch lamb’s wool applicator, but this is likely to result in a layer that’s too thick for the novice. A better way for the do-it-yourselfer is to roll on the polyurethane using a foam roller, preferably a high-density foam roller.

The coat will be thin, even, and will quickly dry to a glassy smooth finish. Use a good brush for cutting in around the room perimeter.

4 Common Hardwood Floor Problems

Posted on: July 10th, 2015 by wfp_admin

Contrary to what all homeowners imagine, some common hardwood floor problems may arise due to various factors. Minor damages on the hardwood floors can simply be repaired by professional hardwood floor technician or by simple DIYer. Here are some hardwood floor problems and their corresponding solutions should the need arises.

Hardwood

1. Cupping

Also called washboarding, cupping happens gradually when the edges of the floorboards elevate while the center of the plank sinks down. Subtle cupping may also happen due to lack of correct acclimation. Cupping is caused by excessive moisture content beneath the floorboards than on top.

Solution:

Ensure to locate first and eliminate the sources of the excessive moisture before trying to repair cupped hardwood floors. Give some time for the hardwood floors to recuperate and return to original shape and state. Though, it may take some weeks or months before this happens. In case the cupped hardwood floors remain the same even after an entire heating season, those permanently deformed planks can be sanded off.

2. Buckling

Buckling refers to floorboards that become warped and lifted off from attached subfloor. It is usually associated with cupping and swelling of the surface. Excessive moisture is the major cause for this problem. Other factors that may contribute to buckling of hardwood floors include: inadequate nailing, improper fasteners and incorrect subfloor construction for nail-down installation method, wrong or insufficient adhesive, using incorrect trowel and insufficient adhesive transfer for glue-down installation, and insufficient expansion gap for floorboards.

Solution:

Initially fix the source of excessive moisture level. Let the flooring dry to normal level. Spot repair or replacement, reinstallation, renailing or refinishing could be done to bring back the floorboards’ appearance.

3. Crowning

Crowning is a result of excessive moisture present on the top surface of the wood floors than on the bottom part. Also, this can also arise when cupped hardwood floors were sanded off as an initiative to repair the problem before letting it completely dry to ideal condition. Basically, the center of the planks appears to be deformed upward than the edges.

Solution:

Bring the moisture level to the normal state. Once the floor stabilized, it could be resanded and refinished.

4. Cracks

Cracks in hardwood floors can happen as a result of years of usage. These can simply be spot repaired with some angled nails to hold the floorboards together. For large cracks, consider to have them refinished. However, if the split is really bad, have the damaged floorboards replaced by professionals.

Apparently, moisture level is the major bane that causes most hardwood floor problems. Ensuring proper installation method is done and proper acclimation is performed beforehand reduces the risk for any damage to your flooring investment.
