Choosing hardwood floor color can create a stunning addition. Wood flooring is a traditional flooring alternative for every homeowner; installers and interior designers. Its a cliché that you wont ever go wrong when you install hardwood floor.

Whatever you have in mind for your interior design; its impossible not to find the hardwood floor color that suits your style and taste; considering the endless wide selection of stains and finishing to bring out the desired color.

Here are tips on choosing hardwood floor color to keep you at the right side of your interior design project.

Tips that you must apply of choosing floor color:

  • Complementing Color: Choose the hardwood floor color that goes along with the overall interior design palette. Do this by choosing the largest interior architectural features. These could be the fireplace, wooden stairs, cabinetry, etc. Find a color that simply complements with that specific large aspect.

  • Color Variation vs: Consistency. Color variation on the surface of the wood floor is just natural; even the same wood floor species may look differently. By having natural oil finish; the color variation on its surface can be pretty apparent. Having the floorboard stained will create a monochromatic look to its design while minimizing the visibility of any color variation. If uniformity concerns you; then choose stain floorboards for your interior. Modern contemporary styles often use the naturally oil finished planks while the stained floorboards are known for traditional architectural design.

Samples to compare and choosing

  • Light Colored vs. Dark Colored Stain. In choosing hardwood floor color; take into consideration the amount of interior space. Light colored stain is recommended for smaller space while dark color stained is ideal for large spaces. Using light colored stained floorboards creates an illusion of more spacious and airy feel in any interior. Having dark colored stained planks work well in an interior that has a lot of light and are sought after for modern and chic interior or urban condos.

  • Bring home floor samples to compare and decide which one works along well with the walls and woodwork. Check which one looks well with furniture and adjoining floors; in broad daylight and evening artificial light. Also, get a feel of each floor sample the moment you enter the room.

Take note that you can have endless of possibilities for hardwood floor colors considering the wide-range selection; of stains and finishes on the floorboards. Taking into consideration numerous factors before coming up with a decision is better; than randomly choosing the hardwood floor color that you fancy. After all; the result should be pleasing in your eyes and not otherwise.

Choosing a Supplier for Hardwood Floors NYC

Posted on: July 15th, 2015 by wfp_admin No Comments

Hardwood floors add financial value and beauty to any residential unit such as house or an apartment. There are many types of hardwood flooring that can be installed in any home based on the wood species that they are made up of. Hardwood floors that come from oak varieties are in demand because of their hardness and their relative resistance to scratches and dents. Meanwhile; hardwood floors that are made up of pine varieties are softer; but are more inexpensive.

When you are planning to install hardwood floors in NYC; you must also consider where you will get your hardwood flooring supplies from. There are a lot of suppliers and depot that will claim that they can best supply you with all your flooring requirements. However; when choosing where to get your wood flooring in NYC, here is a list of what you need to consider:

Availability of materials

You should choose suppliers that have a wide variety of brands to choose from. Some suppliers may be in contract with hardwood manufacturers as their direct distributors and are therefore only carrying the brands that these manufacturers make. Although you can get lower rates if you purchased the brands under contract with the suppliers, your choice of materials are limited.

Expertise

When looking for wood flooring in New York, you should contact a supplier that has a wide range of experience in the different types of wood floors such as solid, engineered, exotic, hand-scraped, laminate, herringbone, parquet, rift and quartered sawn and more. Remember that each type of flooring design will require different techniques of installation so choose a supplier that has the expertise in any kind of wood flooring.

Large Showroom

Consider choosing a hardwood flooring supplier in NYC that has a large showroom. This will allow you to manually inspect their sample hardwood floors conveniently. Suppliers with large showrooms will often show an area installed with different types of hardwood floors. This will help you visualize the samples being on the floor of your home.

Check online presence

A good indicator of a professional hardwood floor supplier is the supplier’s website. Check to see if the supplier you are planning to purchase your hardwood floors from has an online presence. A supplier’s webpage such as www.woodfloorplanet.com will allow you to explore their materials and stocks without having to physically go to their store. You can also ask for an online quote from them once you visit the page.

Geographical location

Probably one of the major reasons for choosing a hardwood floor supplier in NYC is its geographical location. Remember that transporting hardwood flooring materials is expensive since you have to pay all shipping charges. Having a supplier that is located in Manhattan such as www.woodfloorplanet.com will both give you the convenience of having a supplier near your home and the cost effectiveness of having to pay for a shorter trucking route.

4 Common Hardwood Floor Problems

Posted on: July 10th, 2015 by wfp_admin

Contrary to what all homeowners imagine, some common hardwood floor problems may arise due to various factors. Minor damages on the hardwood floors can simply be repaired by professional hardwood floor technician or by simple DIYer. Here are some hardwood floor problems and their corresponding solutions should the need arises.

Hardwood

1. Cupping

Also called washboarding, cupping happens gradually when the edges of the floorboards elevate while the center of the plank sinks down. Subtle cupping may also happen due to lack of correct acclimation. Cupping is caused by excessive moisture content beneath the floorboards than on top.

Solution:

Ensure to locate first and eliminate the sources of the excessive moisture before trying to repair cupped hardwood floors. Give some time for the hardwood floors to recuperate and return to original shape and state. Though, it may take some weeks or months before this happens. In case the cupped hardwood floors remain the same even after an entire heating season, those permanently deformed planks can be sanded off.

2. Buckling

Buckling refers to floorboards that become warped and lifted off from attached subfloor. It is usually associated with cupping and swelling of the surface. Excessive moisture is the major cause for this problem. Other factors that may contribute to buckling of hardwood floors include: inadequate nailing, improper fasteners and incorrect subfloor construction for nail-down installation method, wrong or insufficient adhesive, using incorrect trowel and insufficient adhesive transfer for glue-down installation, and insufficient expansion gap for floorboards.

Solution:

Initially fix the source of excessive moisture level. Let the flooring dry to normal level. Spot repair or replacement, reinstallation, renailing or refinishing could be done to bring back the floorboards’ appearance.

3. Crowning

Crowning is a result of excessive moisture present on the top surface of the wood floors than on the bottom part. Also, this can also arise when cupped hardwood floors were sanded off as an initiative to repair the problem before letting it completely dry to ideal condition. Basically, the center of the planks appears to be deformed upward than the edges.

Solution:

Bring the moisture level to the normal state. Once the floor stabilized, it could be resanded and refinished.

4. Cracks

Cracks in hardwood floors can happen as a result of years of usage. These can simply be spot repaired with some angled nails to hold the floorboards together. For large cracks, consider to have them refinished. However, if the split is really bad, have the damaged floorboards replaced by professionals.

Apparently, moisture level is the major bane that causes most hardwood floor problems. Ensuring proper installation method is done and proper acclimation is performed beforehand reduces the risk for any damage to your flooring investment.

A Guide to Choosing the Right Hardwood Floor

Posted on: July 8th, 2015 by wfp_admin No Comments

hardwood floors, hardwood flooring, hardwood floor refinishing, floor refinishing

Whether for home or business installation, hardwood floor has been an undeniable all-time favorite of owners for years due to its numerous benefits. Since hardwood floor serves as the foundation for any interior design, it is just right to carefully sift through the wide range of selections made available in the marketplace for interested buyers. Oftentimes, when people are confronted with a lot of alternatives, some either feel excited or overwhelmed. To help you discern the numerous choices accessible to buyers, here are guides to keep you on track while choosing the right hardwood floor for your interior. Moreover, these will help you narrow down your choices until you finally feel confident with the right hardwood floor that suits your needs.

Compare Hardwood Flooring Types

Choose between solid or engineered hardwood floors. Take note of the pros and cons of each flooring type. Solid hardwood floor is wear-resistant, long-lasting and can be sanded down to bare wood for multiple times. Its drawbacks are the need to be acclimated to moisture levels before the installation and high susceptibility to moisture content changes, causing shrinkage and expansion. Since engineered hardwood floor has multiple layers of natural wood, these increase the stability of the floorboards, reducing the possibility for movement and gapping. Also, some are made easier for installation. However, it can also be refinished once or twice depending on the thickness of the wear-layer. Evaluate your lifestyle, location and budget to help you come up with a decision.

Know the Difference of Wood Species

Be informed that each wood species has its distinct character that exude rustic, modern or elegant design. Consider the way floors wear over time, stability, hardness, color fastness and maintenance care. Since not all hardwood species are alike, it is best to understand the facts for each wood species that captures your interest.

Decide the Best Grade, Texture, Stain and Finishing

Once youve chosen the right wood species, the next things in line are choosing the right grade, texture, stain and finishes. Wood floors are divided to several grades that reflect the aesthetics of the wood, such as tone variation, knots, mineral streaks, etc. Grades range from clear, select, 1 Common grade to 2 Common grade.

Texture options can create a variety of look for a certain wood species. Choose among trendy wooden textures nowadays such as hand-scraped, brushed, or footworn.
Various stains are offered in the market, readily available for DIY quick touch ups or staining the whole wood floors after sanding. Custom stain colors can be created by mixing up different colors from the same manufacturer.

Choose whether to purchase prefinished or unfinished wood floors. Nowadays, many people prefer prefinished wood floors due to its convenience. Avoid the hassle of finishing floorboards in your place. Reap the benefits of factory finished wood floors, such as durability, easier installation, ease of maintenance and refinishable.

Wood Floor Patterns

There are new angles for installing wooden floors without the mundane straight line. Talk with a professional wood floor installer for custom patterns (e.g. Herringbone and Chevron).

In choosing the right wood floor, set your budget and work on it. Never fall for too good to be true deals. Its most likely to just lure you, but with poor quality. Consider your lifestyle as well as interior elements. Make use of the expertise of wood floor companies in coming up with wood floors of your choice. Remember that technical concerns that you arent aware of can impair the quality and performance of your newly installed floors.
